Filmmaker Janice Ahn recently directed and released Chongo, a short documentary film about Charles Victor Tucker III, who is better know in the rock climbing world as Chongo. Chongo is a prolific Yosemite climber that now lives the carefree homeless life in Sacramento, California. He spends much of his day in the Sacramento library writing a book about the homeless and quantum physics, as well as work for the local homeless newspaper.
I wrote a blog post back in early October about an interesting New York Times article entitled For Rock Climbing Guru, The Sky is His Roof about Chongo’s life and times. It’s not often that the mainstream media gets what climbing is all about, and that article did. Now I highly recommended Chongo, a 5 minute 40 second short film. It’s beautifully photographed. The sound track is perfect.
And Chongo, of course, is full of wisdom about the ways of the world and the way of the rock. As he says, “When you’re a climber, you’re homeless anyway. You’re always running around from one climbing area to another. You’re camping out in order to be at the place where you’re gonna climb at….I guess you could call that homeless.” Janice and crew, great work. We look forward to your next film.
