Touch the Top of the World, a 2006 A&E Television Network movie, was released this week on DVD. The movie is based on the best-selling autobiography with the same name of blind climber Erik Weihenmayer’s quest to climb Mount Everest, a feat he accomplished in 2001.

It’s always great to own and watch climbing movies because if you can’t be out there on the rocks, then they’re the next best thing. There are lots of great indie climbing films like the upcoming Supercrack film and the stuff by Josh Lowell, but there are just not enough of them in the mainstream media. This inspirational film is well worth buying and watching. It’s a film about Erik’s dreams of rock and ice, his dedication to challenging goals, and his passion for climbing, the mountains, and life. If you read his book and watch the film, you will never look at climbing the same way again.

Next week here at Climbing on About.com, I’m publishing a review of the film as well as an interview that I did this morning with Erik as he waited in the Miami airport for a flight back to Denver. Check it out. Erik has some great stories about his rock climbing adventures and mountain ascents. He's an amazing climber who gets out there and does it all.

The film was fine though a bit cliched and predictable. But Erik–he’s amazing. I watched him lead the first pitch of Calypso up in Eldorado one time. He cruised it, plugging gear in the crack. Like I say, he’s amazing and an inspiration.
