Definition of Climbing Slang Word

By Stewart Green, About.com

Beta

Definition: Prior knowledge and advance information given to a climber before he climbs a route. This info about climbing moves, hidden holds, and rest stances usually makes the route easier than climbing it without any knowledge. The late great Gunks climber Jack Mileski came up with the word in the 1980s. Also see On-Sight Ascent.

Usage: "Hey Jack, give me the beta on those moves over the roof."
