Cordelette

A cordelette is a long length of thin rope that is used to equalize the load on two to four anchors on belay ledges, on multi-pitch climbs, or atop cliffs for an array of top-rope anchors. A cordelette is simply a 16- to 24-foot length of high-strength 6mm to 7mm perlon rope whose ends are tied together with a double fisherman’s knot. To equalize multiple anchors, the cordelette is clipped into carabiners on all the anchors (cams, nuts, bolts, pitons, or slings on trees or boulders). The cord is then equalized on the anchors with loops, which are tied together with an overhand knot, creating a single equalized tie-in point for a climber, rappel anchor, or top-rope anchor. Cordelettes are easy to use, add to a climber’s chain of safety, and are a standard and essential piece of modern climbing gear.
