Crash Pad

A crash pad, a portable mat that is usually about four inches thick, is placed below boulder problems, or short difficult climbing routes that are ascended without a safety rope. The boulderer, making repeated tries, falls off the boulder problem and lands on the crash pad so that they won’t sprain an ankle or get injured by the fall.

Crash pads are available from a wide variety of climbing manufactuers and come in various sizes, thicknesses, and weights. Read Basic Bouldering Equipment and All About Bouldering Crash Pads for more information on buying and using crash pads.
