Climbers use either hand drills or portable battery-powered drills to bore holes in rock for the placement of bolts for use as climbing anchors. The use of drills and the placement of bolts are very controversial topics and should never be attempted by novice climbers. Drilling holes permanently alters and mars the rock surface. The use of drills and bolts is an ethical dilemma that is best left to expert climbers.
