Slings

A sling is a piece of nylon webbing, Spectra, or Dyneema, either ½-inch or one-inch wide, that is tied with a water knot or is sewn into a closed loop. Sewn slings, usually made in either two-foot or four-foot lengths, have many climbing uses including extending or tying into an anchor and being clipped to carabiners and protection gear to allow the rope to run smoothly and avoid rope drag. Sewn slings are stronger and more compact than tied ones, so most climbers buy two-foot slings for climbing use. Slings are more commonly used for traditional gear climbing rather than sport climbing. They’re also useful when creating equalized anchors and for leaving at rappel anchors.
