Webbing

Definition of a Climbing Equipment Word

By Stewart Green, About.com

Webbing

Webbing is either flat or tubular nylon tape, in widths from ½ inch to two inches, that is used for making slings and climbing harnesses. Webbing is super strong, with one-inch webbing having a tensile strength of 4,500 pounds and a loop strength (sewn) of 6,000 to 7,400 pounds. Webbing usually comes in large spools and can be purchased by the foot at climbing and outdoor stores. Loops of various lengths can then be tied with a water knot. Sewn slings are stronger than tied ones, but the difference in terms of strength for climbing is negligible. Long lengths of webbing are useful for creating top-rope anchors.
