Climbers and boulderers fly south to Hueco Tanks in the winter because it’s warm. While Arctic snow and frigid temperatures encase most of the United States, Hueco’s is usually pleasant and ideal for climbing. It’s not that the weather is always warm here--it’s just warmer than the rest of the country! While Minnesota suffers under a -20 cold wave in January, it’s usually a balmy 55 degrees here. Hueco Tanks, lying above 4,000 feet, is not immune to winter’s storms, but they are usually short-lived. After a day or so of bleak skies and showers, the clouds part and the sun shines down on the crags. January temperatures average 44.4 degrees, with daytime highs in the 50s and 60s and lows in the mid-30s. Snow flies only two or three days each winter and almost never accumulates. Besides the storm of sunlight, west Texas is also renowned for its wind and dust storms. The typical climbing season at Hueco runs from November through March. April and October offer warmer weather, but the climber will seek shady problems during mid-day. The rest of the year is hot, with daily highs regularly climbing into the 100s. The park averages about eight inches of rainfall every year.
