Long Dong, Taiwan Rock Climbing Photo Gallery

Taiwan, a large island off the southeast coast of China, is surprisingly mountainous with hundreds of peaks. Rock climbing, however, is limited to some bouldering sites and a few limestone and basalt sport areas. Taiwan’s best climbing area is along the rugged and rocky northeast coast near a fishing village called Lungtung or Long Dong, which means Dragon’s Cave. This 2-kilometer stretch of cliffs offers some of Asia’s best sea cliff climbing on hundreds of routes that lace sandstone cliffs above the Pacific Ocean. Matt Robertson, an American expatriate climber now living in Taiwan, has climbed extensively at Long Dong and authored an excellent guidebook to the area’s trad climbing routes.
