Definition of a Climbing Word

Bivouac

A bivouac is a temporary campsite out in the open. Climbers usually bivouac at the base of a route or cliff face so that they can get an early start or sleeping on ledges or portaledges on the route itself. Bivouacs are sometimes unplanned when a route takes longer than anticipated. Often shortened to bivy or bivi.
