Chipping
Creating or improving a hold by permanently altering the rock with a drill or hammer and chisel. This practice is considered extremely unethical and cheating by climbers since it damages the rock resource. Most climbers feel that not every route is meant to be climbed and that the climber needs to elevate their technique and strength to the rock rather than lower it to their standards. Chipping hand and footholds is also illegal in most climbing areas, including those in national parklands and national forests.
