Definition of a Climbing Word

By Stewart Green, About.com

Edge

A handhold or foothold with a sharp square edge; a narrow ledge that ranges in thickness from a dime-width to three inches. When a climber stands on an edge with his rock shoe he uses a foot technique called edging, which usually requires a stiff rock shoe to support his weight. A climber can use an edge for a handhold using techniques of crimping and using an open hand grip.
