Definition of a Climbing Word

By Stewart Green, About.com

Fixed Rope

A climbing rope, often a static rope, that is anchored at a high point and left temporarily “fixed” or left in place. Climbers can then ascend the fixed rope using ascenders to the high point. Fixed ropes are often used on long rock climbs or on high mountains where climbers might need to retreat to lower camps or the cliff base at night or in bad weather.
